DALLAS — Scranton Products is working with the Dallas School System to install bathroom partitions in 14 new elementary, middle and high schools.

In May 2008, Dallas citizens approved a $1.35 billion bond program. The program was designed to reshape the school district through the completion of 61 separate projects. The district will replace several dated facilities and repurpose numerous others with the latest technologies and sustainable features.

Bathroom partitions from Scranton Products were among the many products specifically selected to meet these needs. The school system chose Hiny Hiders Paisley Color and EX texture.

“A textured finish was desired by the district, because they noticed reduced vandalism,” said Karl Prinz of WRA Architects in Dallas.

Scranton Products partitions also met other criteria cited by the city for its new school bathrooms. The installations are designed not to rust or delaminate and resist dents, scratches, graffiti, corrosion, mildew and moisture.

The initiative included building the new George Herbert Walker Bush Elementary School, which officially opened in Addison, Texas, in August 2011, and the William Hardin Adamson High School replacement project, which is slated for completion the summer of 2012.

“The planning was extensive for each of the school bond projects and included designs that were not only innovative, but also enduring and aesthetically pleasing,” says Prinz, who was the project manager for George Herbert Walker Bush Elementary School. “As a result, all the materials were chosen for their ability to comfortably blend into the facility’s modern design, while withstanding the daily use of elementary school students.”

Jason Mellard, who served as architect on the $49 million Adamson High School replacement effort, agreed with the assessment. As an inner-city school, Adamson will have the capacity for 1,300 students in grades nine through 12 when its doors open for the 2012-13 school year.

“Durability was certainly an important consideration when we planned this project,” explains Mellard. “That’s why the Scranton products partitions were chosen by the district for installation throughout the school system. They are exceptionally tough and with the proper support are virtually impossible to rip from the floors.”

DALLAS – Two projects for the Dallas Independent School District are under way, both being built by Cadence McShane Construction Company.

Construction of a new 98,228-square-foot primary school in Dallas will be built on a 12.65-acre site.

Scheduled for completion in June 2012, the two-story elementary school will incorporate a number of sustainable features in compliance with the district’s sustainable design policy and the city’s green building ordinance.

Green attributes include a geothermal heating and cooling system, heat reflective roof, water-efficient plumbing, and natural daylighting, which will collectively contribute to a 31 percent reduction in net energy usage, according to the construction firm.

Sustainable and low-emitting materials will be used in construction, and the building will include a comprehensive recycling program upon completion, according to the firm.

The school will feature 36 classrooms, including specialty rooms for art, music, special and behavioral needs, small groups, and speech.

Additionally, the elementary school will feature two computer labs, a gymnasium, a food service area, and administrative space.

With Dallas-based HKS Architects as the design firm, the facility will include brick veneer masonry walls, glazed block, and pre-finished metal panels.

Cadence McShane will also complete all associated sitework, including mass grading, site utilities, and a detention pond, as well as landscaping and playground areas.

Firm officials said Adelfa Botello Callejo Elementary School is named after an attorney and civil rights activist who was the first Hispanic woman to graduate from Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law and practice law in Dallas.

"The new school named after this significant Dallas resident will provide educational services for 810 students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade," officials said.

Seagoville North Elementary School

The school district also hired Cadence McShane to construct a 106,462-square-foot elementary school to support 810 pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students on a 14-acre site in Seagoville, Texas.

With an exterior made of brick veneer façade and metal stuff backup and gypsum board, the educational facility will encompass 39 classrooms, kitchen and cafeteria, library, and practice gymnasium space.

The construction company will incorporate interior finishes, including contemporary building materials to provide an attractive learning environment for students and faculty.

To support the sustainability mission, green features and products will be used to contribute to energy efficiency, "superior" indoor air quality, and sustainable building products, firm officials said.

The assignment also includes all associated sitework, including mass grading, site utilities, feeder roads, and a detention pond, as well as landscaping and playground areas.

The new school is part of the 2008 Dallas Independent School District bond program, a $1.35 billion, multiphased capital improvement plan that aims to improve technology, science laboratories, meal service, sports complexes, and the overall functionality of numerous buildings.

PageSoutherlandPage is providing comprehensive architectural services for the facility, scheduled for completion in May 2012.

ALLEN, Texas – Allen High School football players could be blitzing, buttonhooking, and bootlegging in a new $60 million football stadium as early as the fall 2012. The new stadium is just one of many additions to the school district of this burgeoning north Dallas community.

Residents of the city recently approved funds for the new 18,000-seat stadium as part of a $119 million bond package that was passed in May 2009. The bond also set aside about $23.3 million for a new performing arts center and $36.5 million for a transportation and maintenance facility.

Home to approximately 5,000 students in 9th through 12th grades, the schools is one of the largest of its kind in the state. The city has seen unprecedented growth over the last two decades.

“We’ve been growing continually since the mid-90s,” says Tim Carroll, public information director for the Allen Independent School District.

When Carroll started working for the district 15 years ago, it supervised nearly 6,900 students, he says. Today, it educates approximately 18,000 students.

“We’re averaging [construction of] about one new elementary school per year for the last several years,” Carroll says about the district, which now boasts 15 elementary schools.

With residential growth just about maxed out for the city, says Carroll, the district is building out its facilities in unison, providing renovations and expansions where needed.

Last year’s $119 million bond came fresh on the heels of a $219 million bond approved just six months earlier.
