]]> LINCOLN, Neb. — As part of a two-part project to expand the school’s athletic facilities, University of Nebraska at Lincoln will construct an indoor baseball/softball practice facility at Haymarket Park.

The distinction between warm-weather schools and those in colder region becomes apparent when schools first start out the season. According to reports, the team has previously had to go to other facilities to practice indoors during bad weather.

The new facility, which will be located east of the Bowlin Softball Stadium and north of the Hawks Baseball Field, will feature batting cages, pitching mounds, a turf system suitable for infield practice and a netting system for live hitting.

The addition of on-site batting facilities will enhance Nebraska’s opportunities to host regional baseball and softball tournaments in accordance with NCAA guidelines.

NEBCO, the university’s public-private partner, will oversee construction of the 22,000 square-foot project, while the school’s athletic department will be responsible for the $4.75 million financing, according to the university.

The university is also expanding Memorial Stadium’s east stands, a $55.5 million project that would add about 5,000 seats and 30 new indoor/outdoor suites, along with 20,000 square feet for research space, according to reports.

]]> ORLANDO, Fla. — The University of Central Florida could spend up to $70 million to expand and replace its athletic facilities over the next 10 years. 

The UCF Athletics Board of Directors plan calls for the expansion or renovation of five existing facilities and construction of a new academic/athletics support center, intercollegiate tennis center, and a track and soccer clubhouse. The proposal will go before the UCF Board of Trustees for final approval before fundraising can begin. 
 

All of the construction will occur within the athletics village quadrant on the northeast side of campus. Projects include expanding the Bright House Networks Stadium, the track and soccer complex, and expanding and renovating UCF’s baseball stadium and the Wayne Densch Sports Center. 
 

The proposed 50,000-square-foot academics/athletics support center would be built on a vacant site between the Wayne Densch Center and a residential tower. 
 

Expansion of the UCF baseball complex is slated for development in three phases and would add 3,380 seats to the current 800-seat facility. The first phase calls for construction of 1,200 bleacher seats, with 600 seats to be added beyond each dugout. The second phase includes construction of an elevated press box, seven luxury suites and club level seating. The final phase will add 2,000 seats to the present concourse, along with new public restrooms and concession space.
 

In addition to a larger stadium, an expansion and renovation of the team clubhouse, upgrades to the field and other improvements are also planned. A 7,500-square-foot clubhouse will also be constructed for the track and field and soccer programs. The facility will include locker rooms, meeting space, an athletic training room and equipment storage. 
 

The UCF Intercollegiate Tennis Complex will include 12 championship-caliber courts and a 1,000-seat grandstand. The new tennis complex will also contain a clubhouse with locker rooms and other amenities for both the men’s and women’s programs. 
 

An expansion and renovation at the Wayne Densch Sports Center, which houses football operations, the main weight room and an athletic training center, will include a 12,000-square-foot addition. Planned upgrades include an expanded football locker room with a student-athlete lounge, a larger equipment storage room and expansions to the weight room and office space. 
 

An expansion to the Bright House Networks football stadium is also considered within the 10-year plan. The first component of this project would be an addition to the Roth Tower to provide more suites, club seating and operational space. The second component would expand the seating bowl with additional 10,000 seats on the east site of the stadium. The expansion would bring Bright House’s overall seating capacity to more than 56,000.
